PLACES ON EARTH THAT DON'T LOOK REAL

🌍 PLACES ON EARTH THAT DON'T LOOK REAL

🔎 A Curious Minds Investigation

Today we went down another Curious Minds rabbit hole.

It started with some photographs online.

A mountain that looked as though someone had painted rainbow stripes across it.

A desert covered in brilliant blue pools.

Trees that looked as though they belonged on another planet.

A cave made from swirling blue marble.

And then...

A glacier that appeared to be BLEEDING. 😳🩸

Obviously, we had questions.

ARE THESE PLACES ACTUALLY REAL?!

Because these days, seeing a photograph isn't enough.

Pictures can be edited.

Colours can be enhanced.

Images can be created using AI.

And sometimes something really does exist, but the photograph showing it has been altered to make it look even more spectacular.

So instead of immediately believing everything we saw...

We investigated. 🔎

And it turns out our planet is considerably weirder than we give it credit for.

🩸 1. BLOOD FALLS, ANTARCTICA

📍 WHERE IS IT?

Blood Falls can be found at Taylor Glacier in Antarctica's McMurdo Dry Valleys.

And yes...

BLOOD FALLS IS REAL. 😳

But despite its rather terrifying name...

It isn't blood.

Thank goodness for that. 😂

🔬 SO WHY IS IT RED?

Beneath Taylor Glacier is extremely salty water called brine.

That brine contains lots of iron.

When the iron rich water emerges from beneath the glacier and reaches the surface, the iron reacts with oxygen.

Think about what happens when iron is left outside for a long time.

It rusts.

Something similar is happening here.

The iron creates that extraordinary rusty red colour against the white ice. Scientists have also discovered microorganisms associated with this unusual cold, dark, salty environment beneath the glacier.

📸 BUT WHAT ABOUT OUR PICTURE?

Here's where our investigation gets interesting.

Blood Falls is completely real.

But the photograph we found online shows an enormous, brilliantly red waterfall pouring dramatically down the glacier.

Real photographs of Blood Falls usually look much less like a giant waterfall of red liquid. The red staining spreads across part of the glacier as iron rich brine emerges.

So our verdict is:

🟡 REAL PLACE, MISLEADING OR HEAVILY ALTERED IMAGE

And that teaches us something important already.

A real place doesn't automatically mean every photograph of it is accurate.

💡 CRAZIEST FACT

The water beneath the glacier is so salty that it can remain liquid in conditions where ordinary water would freeze.

And scientists study this strange environment partly because it can help them think about how life might survive in extreme environments elsewhere in our Solar System.

🌈 2. RAINBOW MOUNTAIN, PERU

Now THIS looks like somebody opened a giant box of chalk and coloured in a mountain. 😂

Its name is Vinicunca, often called Rainbow Mountain.

📍 WHERE IS IT?

It is high in the Andes Mountains of Peru, near Cusco.

And...

🟢 YES, IT'S REAL!

Those stripes genuinely exist.

🔬 HOW DID THIS HAPPEN?

The colours weren't painted onto the mountain.

They come from different layers of sediment containing different minerals.

Over an enormous period of geological history, sediments accumulated in the area.

Movement of Earth's tectonic plates eventually pushed those layers upwards as mountains formed.

Then erosion helped expose them.

Different minerals and chemical processes produced different colours, including reds, greens, yellows, pinks and pale cream coloured layers.

So Rainbow Mountain is essentially displaying part of its geological history on the outside.

📸 BUT IS OUR PICTURE ACCURATE?

The mountain genuinely has colourful stripes, although photographs online can vary enormously depending on lighting, weather, camera settings and editing.

So don't assume every neon coloured Rainbow Mountain photograph represents exactly what your eyes would see standing there.

💡 CRAZIEST FACT

Some of the colours can actually be linked to particular mineral mixtures.

For example, green colouring is associated with minerals containing iron, magnesium and copper compounds, while reddish colours are associated with iron rich clays.

🌳 3. SOCOTRA, YEMEN

Okay.

This one genuinely looks like somebody accidentally uploaded a screenshot from an alien planet. 👽😂

📍 WHERE IS IT?

Socotra is part of an archipelago belonging to Yemen, situated in the north western Indian Ocean near the Gulf of Aden.

And those ridiculous looking trees?

🟢 REAL.

🌳 WHY DOES EVERYTHING LOOK SO STRANGE?

Socotra has been geographically isolated for a very long time.

That isolation allowed plants and animals there to evolve separately from populations elsewhere.

The result is extraordinary.

Around:

🌱 37% OF SOCOTRA'S PLANT SPECIES

occur nowhere else on Earth.

Even more amazingly, around 90% of its reptile species and 95% of its land snail species are found nowhere else.

One of its most famous plants is the dragon blood tree.

Its branches spread out into a huge umbrella shaped crown.

There are also bizarre swollen trunked plants that look almost as though someone has turned a normal tree upside down.

🧬 A NEW WORD: ENDEMIC

When a species occurs naturally in one particular geographical area and nowhere else, scientists describe it as:

ENDEMIC

Socotra is packed with endemic species.

💡 CRAZIEST FACT

Socotra is sometimes nicknamed the:

"Galápagos of the Indian Ocean."

That's because of its extraordinary biodiversity and number of species found nowhere else.

💙 4. LENÇÓIS MARANHENSES, BRAZIL

This photograph confused us.

Because we're looking at enormous white sand dunes...

filled with gorgeous turquoise lagoons.

So...

IS THIS A DESERT FULL OF LAKES?!

Not quite. 😂

📍 WHERE IS IT?

This is Lençóis Maranhenses National Park in north eastern Brazil.

And yes...

🟢 COMPLETELY REAL.

🌧️ HOW CAN THERE BE SO MUCH WATER?

Despite looking very much like a desert, the area has a semi humid climate and receives a substantial rainy season.

During that rainy season, water collects between the enormous dunes.

The result is thousands of temporary lagoons surrounded by brilliant white sand.

And here's the really surprising bit.

Those lagoons are fed exclusively by rainwater.

🌬️ AND THE DUNES MOVE!

Wind constantly reshapes this landscape.

Some dunes can migrate by as much as 25 metres in a year.

So the landscape doesn't simply sit there looking pretty.

It is continually changing.

💡 CRAZIEST FACT

During the dry season, many temporary lagoons disappear.

Then the rains return...

and lagoons appear again between dunes that may have moved and changed shape.

Imagine returning every year and finding nature has rearranged the scenery. 😂

🧡 5. ANTELOPE CANYON, USA

This one looks like someone made a cave out of melted orange chocolate.

But nope.

Rock.

📍 WHERE IS IT?

Antelope Canyon is located on Navajo land near Page, Arizona.

It is what geologists call a:

SLOT CANYON

A slot canyon is an extremely narrow canyon with tall rock walls.

The Navajo name for Upper Antelope Canyon, Tsé'bighánílíní, means "the place where water runs through rocks."

Which gives us a pretty enormous clue about how places like this form.

💦 WATER CAN SCULPT ROCK

Over very long periods, rushing water and erosion can carve narrow passages through sandstone.

Flash floods are especially powerful in slot canyons.

Water rushing through narrow spaces can carry sediment, rocks and debris, gradually altering the rock around it.

☀️ WHERE DOES THAT MAGICAL LIGHT COME FROM?

At certain times, sunlight enters openings above the canyon.

Against the orange and red sandstone, it can produce those spectacular beams of light you see in photographs.

💡 CRAZIEST FACT

Flash flooding can occur in slot canyons even when the sky directly above you looks clear, because heavy rain can fall somewhere else upstream.

That is one reason visitors to Antelope Canyon must go with authorised guides.

🩵 6. THE MARBLE CAVES, CHILE

Okay.

These genuinely look fake.

Blue water.

Swirling grey and white walls.

Entire caves that appear to have been painted.

But...

🟢 THEY'RE REAL TOO!

📍 WHERE ARE THEY?

The Marble Caves, also known as the Marble Chapels, are found in General Carrera Lake in Chilean Patagonia.

🔬 HOW WERE THEY MADE?

The caves really are made from marble.

For thousands of years, water has gradually eroded and sculpted the rock.

The result is an extraordinary network of arches, chambers and curved walls.

💙 WHY DO THEY LOOK BLUE?

The turquoise glacial water and changing light create beautiful reflections inside the marble chambers.

That means their appearance can actually change depending on the light and conditions.

Nature apparently decided ordinary caves weren't fancy enough. 😂

💡 CRAZIEST FACT

These shapes weren't carved by humans.

Water did it.

Millennia of erosion turned solid marble into those smooth, flowing shapes.

🌸 7. THE COLOURFUL TERRACES

And then we reached this photograph.

Pink.

Purple.

Green.

Blue.

Yellow.

It looks like someone spilled an entire paint palette across a mountainside.

Terraced landscapes absolutely exist, including spectacular colourful rice terraces in places such as Yunnan in China, where flooded terraces can reflect the sky and landscape around them.

But this particular photograph is where our Curious Minds rule becomes important.

📸 CAN WE VERIFY THIS EXACT IMAGE?

Not confidently enough.

The colours appear extremely intense, and from the image alone we cannot reliably establish exactly where it was taken or how much editing has been applied.

So...

🟡 OUR VERDICT: DON'T SHARE IT AS FACT YET.

And actually?

That's a GOOD scientific answer.

Because investigating doesn't mean we always have to reach:

YES.

or

NO.

Sometimes the correct answer is:

🤔 WE DON'T HAVE ENOUGH EVIDENCE YET.

That's much better than guessing.

🤯 AMAZING PLANET EARTH FACTS

🌈 Rainbow Mountain's stripes come from different mineral rich geological layers.

🩸 Blood Falls isn't blood at all. Its colour is associated with iron rich salty water emerging from Taylor Glacier.

🌳 Around 37% of Socotra's plant species occur nowhere else on Earth.

💙 Lençóis Maranhenses has enormous sand dunes AND rainwater lagoons.

🌬️ Some of its dunes can move up to around 25 metres in a year.

🧡 Antelope Canyon is a slot canyon shaped by erosion and powerful water flows.

🩵 Patagonia's Marble Caves were sculpted by water over thousands of years.

🔎 And sometimes an amazing photograph online really isn't reliable enough for us to decide what we're looking at.

🕵️ CURIOUS MINDS CHALLENGE

Okay girls...

Time to become investigators.

For every incredible picture you find online, ask yourself:

1. Does this place actually exist?

2. Is THIS particular photograph genuine?

3. Has the photograph been edited or enhanced?

4. Can we find the same place shown by a reliable source?

5. Can we explain scientifically HOW it formed?

And here's the important one...

If you can't prove whether something is real or fake, what should you say?

Not:

"It must be fake."

And not:

"I saw it online, so it's real."

The answer is:

"I DON'T HAVE ENOUGH EVIDENCE YET." 🔎

That is exactly how good investigators think.

🎨 REAL, ENHANCED OR FAKE?

Now go back through our photographs.

Before looking at our answers, decide where YOU would put each one:

🟢 REAL

🟡 REAL PLACE, BUT THE IMAGE MAY BE ENHANCED OR MISLEADING

🔴 FAKE

NOT ENOUGH EVIDENCE

And remember...

Something can be a real place while the photograph supposedly showing it is fake.

That distinction matters.

🌍 THE BEST PART OF TODAY'S DISCOVERY

When we started investigating these photographs, we expected to find some fakes.

And we did find something misleading.

We found something we couldn't confidently verify.

But we also discovered something rather wonderful.

Sometimes...

EARTH REALLY IS THAT WEIRD. 😂🌍

There really are mountains striped with different colours.

There really are enormous white dunes filled with blue rainwater lagoons.

There really is an island covered with plants that look like they belong on another planet.

There really are caves sculpted from marble.

And there really is red, iron rich water emerging from an Antarctic glacier.

We don't need to believe everything we see online.

But we don't need to become so suspicious that we assume everything extraordinary must be fake either.

Instead...

Be curious.

Ask questions.

Look for evidence.

Change your mind when the evidence changes.

And never stop investigating just because something looks impossible.

Because occasionally the answer really is...

"YES. EARTH ACTUALLY DID THAT." 🌍🤯💚

And perhaps that's the coolest thing we've discovered today.
