Time helps us organise our days, weeks, months and years.

Without time, life would be very confusing!

🌞 Before Clocks Existed

Thousands of years ago, people did not have clocks, watches or mobile phones.

Instead, they looked at nature.

People watched:

☀️ The Sun

🌙 The Moon

⭐ The Stars

When the Sun rose, people knew it was morning.

When the Sun was high in the sky, they knew it was around midday.

When the Sun disappeared, they knew night was coming.

🕰️ The First Clocks

Ancient Egyptians created some of the earliest ways to tell time over 3,000 years ago.

One of these was called a sundial.

A sundial used the Sun's shadow to show the time.

Later people invented:

⚙️ Mechanical clocks

⌚ Watches

📱 Digital clocks

Today we can tell the time almost anywhere.

Time helps us:

Without time, it would be difficult to plan anything.

Now that we know the parts of a clock, it's time to learn how to tell the time!

Don't worry. We'll take it one step at a time.

🕐 O'Clock

When the minute hand points to 12, we say:

O'Clock

Examples:

🕐 1 O'Clock

🕑 2 O'Clock

🕒 3 O'Clock

🕓 4 O'Clock

How to Spot O'Clock

✅ Hour hand points directly to a number

Half Past means:

30 minutes after the hour

When the minute hand points to 6, it means 30 minutes have passed.

How to Spot Half Past

✅ Minute hand points to 6

✅ Hour hand sits between two numbers

Example:

If the hour hand is between 4 and 5 and the minute hand points to 6:

🕒 Quarter Past

A quarter means one quarter of an hour.

There are 60 minutes in an hour.

60 ÷ 4 = 15

So Quarter Past means:

15 minutes after the hour

Each number on a clock represents 5 minutes.

Let's count around the clock:

🌟 Easy Trick

Count in fives:

5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60

The minute hand is simply showing how many minutes have passed.

If the minute hand is between 12 and 6, we say:

Example:

Minute hand on 2

Hour hand just past 4

🌞 Why Do We Need AM and PM?

A clock goes around twice every day.

Once in the daytime.

Once at night.

So how do we know the difference between 7 in the morning and 7 in the evening?

We use AM and PM.

🌅 AM

AM means the time between:

🕛 Midnight (12:00 AM)

and

🕛 Midday (12:00 PM)

Examples:

🌅 7:00 AM = Breakfast time

🌅 8:30 AM = Morning lessons

🌅 10:00 AM = Mid morning

🌇 PM

PM means the time between:

🕛 Midday (12:00 PM)

and

🕛 Midnight (12:00 AM)

Examples:

🌇 1:00 PM = Afternoon

🌇 6:00 PM = Dinner time

🌇 8:00 PM = Evening

🕛 What Is 24 Hour Time?

Many timetables use 24 hour time.

Instead of starting again after 12, we keep counting.

Examples:
